Mizuno Wave Technology

Cushioning explained: Mizuno Wave

Mizuno drew from nature for its Wave cushioning technology. Researchers noted how sound waves and tidal waves dissipate energy and sought to apply similar attenuation to Mizuno's line of running shoes.

Mizuno derived the idea for its Wave technology when engineers studied the way nature deals with impact forces. From sound waves to tidal waves, waveforms spread and dissipate energy extremely quickly. This simplicity served as inspiration, leading Mizuno to create its marquee midsole, the Mizuno Wave.

As a runner’s foot touches the ground, Wave is designed to reduce and redirect impact forces away from the foot. Wave acts much like a car’s suspension, offering cushioning while keeping the foot centered in the shoe from heelstrike through toe-off.

Mizuno engineers have developed a number of Wave shapes in order to gear shoes to runners’ unique strides. Wave’s compact form is aimed to keep shoes sleeker and lighter than competitive systems.

Seven years of this study led Mizuno to develop the Wave Prophecy in summer 2011. This shoe was the Japanese company’s first fully mechanical midsole that was truly runnable, and represented Mizuno’s philosophy of “Kaizen,” Japanese for “continuous evolution.”
