The Nike Air Force 1 shoes have often been described as the greatest and most influential sneaker of all time. First released in 1982, the AF1 was dreamed up by Nike great Bruce Kilgore. Named after the airplane that transported then-president Ronal Reagan, it was the first basketball shoe to contain Nike Air technology in the sole. The original, a white and grey test prototype, featured a high-top silhouette, an ankle strap and a concentric-circle tread pattern on the outsole.
Almost immediately, the shoe was on fire. Endorsements from NBA superstars like Charles Barkley, Michael Cooper and Moses Malone quickly made the AF1 a must-have sneaker, both on and off the courts. The AF1 craze only grew over the next 20 years, and soon ballers weren’t the only ones touting around in the iconic kicks. They graced the feet of Jay-Z, and in 2002, fellow rapper Nelly garnered a No. 1 hit inspired by the rainbow of AF1 colorways. On its journey from the court to the street, the Air Force 1 wracked up over 1,800 colorways and a price tag ranging anywhere from $80-$200.
The sneaker’s immense popularity in the world of street fashion paved the way for other Nike greats to make the same transition from the hardwood to the streets. In fact, just four years after the release of the first Air Force 1, the Air Jordan hit the scene and became a nation-wide sensation just as fast as the shoe’s namesake.
