Sixteen years of research and development from a company famously known for its innovation culminated in the unprecedented cushioning system aptly named Shox. In late 2000, Nike officially debuted Shox, a revolutionary system of columns that they claimed would provide maximum support and impact protection in a new and highly energy-efficient manner unlike any other system available. Embraced by the masses, Nike Shox have become a popular choice for both comfort and style, solidifying their position in the ever-changing, constantly evolving shoe world.
In 1984, the idea of using a spring or coil to improve the economy of running was born. The idea was highly influenced by the “tuned” indoor running track at Harvard University, on which a springy running surface was installed, resulting in 3% (or seven seconds) faster run times for runners that used the track. The developers of this track calculated the perfect amount of springiness a surface would require in order to work with the human body to maximize the storage and release of natural energy.
Nike was inspired and wanted to take this technology a step further. Why be limited to a specific location (the Harvard track) where energy efficiency and return were optimum when a runner could lace up this same technology and take it with him anywhere?
The steel midsole springs of 1984 gave way to an injection-molded envelope with foam columns inside of it in 1990. Nike was getting closer. In 1997, the previous model’s envelope was replaced by two plates, between which stood the foam columns. This final iteration evolved into what we now recognize as the Nike Shox columns: flexible, energy-efficient columns between two moderator plates that work in tandem with a transition wedge to uniformly distribute pressure and provide a unique responsiveness and enhanced comfort.
The comfort and performance of Nike Shox are only matched by the attractiveness of the shoes. They provide a unique palette on which clean, classic colors look just as attractive as the bright hues and flashy color combinations of more modern trends. This versatility enhances the shoe’s ageless, gender-defying appeal. Available in numerous models that span many specific sports and activities, it’s not difficult to find a pair that fit, perform and appeal to just about any individual.
