Cushioning explained: ASICS GEL

ASICS loads its GEL cushioning system into the midsole at the key points underfoot of its running shoes.

GEL
The ASICS GEL Cushioning System has been the core technology of ASICS’ footwear for nearly two decades. Placed within the shoe’s midsole at key impact areas, the GEL Cushioning System works in conjunction with the midsole material to attenuate the shock experienced by the foot from vertical forces in all sporting activities.

ASICS footwear meets the particular biomechanical needs of athletes. The GEL Cushioning System is a key component in meeting these needs and is developed in many densities and shapes to best fit the impact requirements of these athletes. ASICS’ GEL Cushioning System is available both in the rearfoot and forefoot.

Rearfoot GEL
During a standard run, the foot encounters vertical impact forces normally 3 to 5 times an athlete’s body weight during heelstrike. The GEL Cushioning System in the heel attenuates the shock from this. This Rearfoot GEL Cushioning System stabilizes the foot during the first phase of the Impact Guidance System (I.G.S.).

Forefoot GEL
The GEL Cushioning System in the forefoot reduces the loading forces that would normally be applied as the foot moves in propulsion. The Forefoot GEL Cushioning System works in conjunction with the midsole material to reduce the shear forces and the forefoot flex grooves to accommodate the pressure as the foot rolls through the “line of progression” to toe-off, the final phase of the I.G.S.

The first ASICS shoes were introduced in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka in Kobe, Japan. Onitsuka founded the athletic footwear company Onitsuka Co. Ltd. by manufacturing basketball shoes in his living room. In 1977, he chose the name ASICS — an acronym derived from a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" — which translates to "a sound mind in a sound body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the range of sports shoes produced by ASICS widened to a variety of Olympic styles used by athletes worldwide. ASICS shoes were introduced to the United States in 1977 and were part of a wave that introduced athletic performance and technical advancements in shoes. In 1990, the ASICS research institute was opened. Today, ASICS is known for building some of the finest shoes for running, volleyball and more.
