The Nike design team watched men and women running barefoot in the grass and realized the construction of the traditional running shoe was limiting the natural motion of the foot. When running barefoot, the athletes were experiencing better range of motion and strengthening muscles in the feet.

Nike’s “innovation kitchen” kept these observations in mind when designing the Free running shoe line. Nike Free running shoes incorporate cutting-edge technology to replicate the barefoot experience — light weight, natural feel, flexibility — while adding underfoot protection and support. To obtain the full range of motion, Nike designers took the sole of a traditional Nike shoe and made deep grooves in the bottom — flex grooves — which allowed the foot to flex and extend as if the runner was running barefoot. Nike added waffle pistons to increase impact absorption. The upper was made of a lightweight breathable material that reduced weight and increased the “barefoot” feel.
