What began in a grandmother's Washington, D.C., basement in 1996 has grown into a global array of performance athletic apparel and footwear.

Kevin Plank was a recently graduated 23-year-old special-teams captain for the Maryland Terrapins. It was the oppressively hot summer two-a-days of 1995 that inspired Plank to develop a better performance apparel option than the sweat-soaked t-shirts that hung heavily on his teammates and him.

Plank named his new fledgling company Under Armour. After extensive research and experimentation, he arrived at the original Under Armour HeatGear t-shirt, named the #0037. The shirt consisted of moisture-wicking fibers that helped keep the wearer cooler, drier, and lighter even in the hottest and stickiest of conditions.

The next year, Under Armour debuted its ColdGear garments, designed to keep athletes warm in colder conditions, as well as lighter and drier. The outfitter's lineup of AllSeasonGear also hit the market that year, tailored toward athletes who train between those extremes.

By the end of 1998, Under Armour had moved out of Grandma's basement and into a headquarters and warehouse in Baltimore. From there, the company hit the big-time when its gear was featured in the football film “Any Given Sunday, ” starring Al Pacino and Jamie Foxx. Over the next two years, Under Armour expanded into Major League Baseball and the NHL.

Under Armour began to “Protect This House” with an energetic ad campaign in 2003 that put the brand on the national map in a bold, aggressive way. Other memorable campaigns have followed, cementing Under Armour into the collective mind of athletes across disciplines and around the world.


Foot Locker stocks a full lineup of Under Armour's HeatGear, ColdGear, and AllSeasonGear performance apparel — more than 1,000 models in countless color combinations.

Whether it's compression undershirts, or tights, Heatgear and ColdGear are designed to wick moisture away from the body while helping to support the athlete's muscles.


As Under Armour innovated performance apparel, it also set out to revolutionize performance footwear.

Micro G cushioning is designed to be 30% thinner than standard foams and to be lighter, lower, bouncier, and stronger than other cushioning systems. A lower profile lets the athlete respond more quickly, as well as reduce the compression set that ultimately limits the responsiveness of many other foams.

ClutchFit consists of an interlocking synthetic mesh upper designed to activate under pressure and promote natural foot movement. The ClutchFit Drive was the first shoe worn by Golden State's Stephen Curry, who went on to become the 2014-15 MVP.

Curry's first official signature basketball shoe featured Under Armour's newest technology, in the Charged Foam Curry One. Charged Foam is designed to be responsive for players reliant on quick cuts.

The Future

Some of the brightest stars in the sports universe wear the UA logo — Curry, Emmanuel Mudiay, Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Eddie Lacy, and dozens of other athletes and universities. It may have started in a basement, but how high Under Armour can climb is anyone's guess.
