Visitors to, and participants in, the New York City Marathon Expo in early November 2011 caught a glimpse of Saucony’s future when the PowerGrid™ Triumph 9 debuted. The new heel-to-toe offset went from 12mm to 8 mm. With the new heel height being closer to flat, the foot lands at a more natural, midfoot-oriented, angle.
“We discovered that engineering an 8mm heel-to-toe offset in our best-loved running shoes would offer great control, alignment and suspension,” said Patrick O’Malley, Saucony’s senior vice president of global product.
This reduction in material enables the PowerGrid Triumph 9 to trim a full ounce from its predecessor.
PowerGrid, a lightweight injection-molded foam, combines Saucony’s award-winning Grid technology with its new proprietary PowerFoam™. Injection molding makes this lighter and more plush than the standard ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Saucony also heralds this method as being more green as it uses less material by using less layering.
A Sauc-fit upper helps to lock the midfoot to the platform as well as keep the heel secure and comfortable. Optional lacing patterns allow runners to choose according to their needs.
The IBR (injected blown rubber) outsole provides lightweight, responsive cushioning while retaining durability.
