If you live within the five boroughs of New York City and you're an entrant in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, we invite you to apply to be a part of this year's Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge, a race within the ING New York City Marathon. The Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge team will include five runners—one from each borough of New York City—who have drawn inspiration from running in order to face significant challenges in their lives.

This is your chance to take your 2012 Marathon experience to a higher level and show your pride in your borough, while bringing awareness to the challenges that you've faced. The Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge team will be treated as VIPs during Marathon week and on Marathon Day! You'll have your very own start time and access to VIP tents, and you and the team will be featured on the WABC television broadcast. The runner who finishes with the fastest time will become the 2012 Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge Champion and win a Tiffany & Co. trophy—and citywide bragging rights.

Foot Locker hits the ground running for National Running Day

June 1, 2011

Foot Locker went all-out for National Running Day on June 1, 2011. More than 70 runners gathered at the RUN by Foot Locker store at 34 E. 14th St. in New York City for a meet-and-greet with legendary runners and for a 4-mile group run.

Nationwide, running enthusiasts enjoyed a 20% discount available that day online.

RUN by Foot Locker participated in the charity check-in program for Shoes that Fit, the official charity of National Running Day. Visitors wore an "I RUN" statement or picked up a National Running Day sticker — for every sticker selected, New York Road Runners donated $1 to Shoes that Fit (up to $5,000), which will help furnish tens of thousands of athletic shoes to children in need.

Bart Yasso, Toby Tanser and Desiree Ficker mingled before leading the group run on a steamy 90-degree day, and then signing autographs back at the store. Yasso has completed marathons on every continent (including Antarctica) and has completed the Ironman Triathlon five times. He also has bicycled across the country, alone and unsupported, twice.

Tanser, who was mugged and nearly killed while jogging in Africa in 2000, founded the Shoe4Africa project to help provide athletic shoes for children there. He also has published a book, with proceeds going toward building a hospital in Kenya.

Ficker has been a professional triathlete for more than 10 years and won the Livestrong Austin (Texas) Marathon in February. She ran the race in 2:50:35 and was more than 10 minutes ahead of the nearest competitor.

RUN by Foot Locker gave away three $100 gift cards and five copies of Yasso's book, My Life on the Run. Each participant received a Runner's World/RUN by Foot Locker gym sack, Runner's World magazine, and a tech shirt.

National Running Day, founded in 2009, is an annual celebration of the sport, held the first Wednesday of June.
