The Making of a Champion
Established in 1919 by the Feinbloom brothers as Knickerbocker Knitting Company, the company began its rise in the sportswear industry by focusing on quality-made sweatshirts, sweatpants, and uniforms.
As organized sports gained popularity, both at the university level and professionally, athletes were consistently in need of athleticwear designed with purpose and specificity.
The University of Michigan became the first school to partner exclusively with the company that would be Champion, leading to further partnerships as coaches talked and word spread. By the 1930s, Champion Knitting Mills, Inc. had product in college bookstores across the country and was known for durable, functional, and comfortable pieces that could be used for both sport and everyday activities.
Innovation Takes the Reigns
During the 1940s through the 1960s, Champion welcomed a period of technological and design innovation. Attempts to perfect performance-driven gear led to one of the brand’s most well-known inventions: The Reverse Weave sweatshirt. Engineered to reduce damage when sports uniforms were washed en masse, the unique construction has become an essential part of Champion clothing.
Modern Style
The infamous “C” logo first appeared in the 1960s, and throughout the 1970s Champion looked to become a modern choice in street-ready apparel. Continuous innovation led to versatile collections, incorporating lighter fabrics, breathable mesh lining, reversable designs, and a focus on branding for styles that looked as good as they performed.
Lasting Heritage
Champion continues to make a name for itself by mixing iconic, archival roots with future-forward elements. Not just relegated to performance clothing, the company offers shoes as well as accessories.
