The move was prophetic in a few ways: It propelled a name change and it solidified the team as one of two to represent New York. The New York Nets went on to win a pair of league championships. Eventually, the two professional leagues at the time merged, and the Nets joined the newly formed group.
In 1977, however, the team made its way back to New Jersey — albeit temporarily. They played as the New Jersey Nets until 2012 when they won a pair of conference championships. When they transferred to a new arena in Brooklyn that same year, they team adopted the city’s name as its own.
