This stellar shoe has gone through six iterations, each presenting a unique design. But no matter which iteration you choose, you get an exceptional running shoe.
The Evolution of the 990
First released in 1982, the 990 was the first running performance shoe priced at $100.
This was pricey at the time but also aligned with the 990’s cutting-edge design. To the surprise of many, including New Balance execs, the shoe became an instant hit despite the price tag.
And the shoe did not disappoint. NB designed it over four years of research and testing, so this sneaker was and is worth every penny.
Following the success of the first iteration (v1), NB released the v2 in 1998. And the v3 came out in 2012. From the first iteration to the third, the quality remained extraordinary, and they honed the appearance without compromising the iconic silhouette.
With the v4 and v5 releases, New Balance only continued to elevate the shoe’s construction and aesthetic. However, the v5 was a modern departure from the OG silhouette.
Today, we have the New Balance 990 v6. It stays true to the very first iteration while utilizing the newest tech and freshest design elements.
Sneakers That Move With You
A Blown Rubber outsole offers unmatched traction on all surfaces. The contoured outsole and deep treads grip the ground, even when it’s slippery, so you always feel stable.
The shoes can help runners go farther with a shock-absorbing design that prevents soreness and fatigue. The ENCAP midsole cushioning is a lightweight foam with a durable polyurethane rim. It responds to every move you make, ensuring lasting comfort.
A combination Nubuck leather, pigskin, and mesh upper is rugged but also wonderfully flexible and dynamic. The leather offers durability, while the pigskin is strong but soft. With multiple mesh panels, the design keeps your feet cool and dry while you run.
Small details, like reflective accents, a cushioned ankle collar, and a textured tongue add style and comfort to the construction.
Cool and Clean Colorways
One of the things that set the 990 apart in 1982 was the understated colorways. At the time, neons and bright colors were all the rage, but NB offered a palate-cleansing collection of colorways.
Now you won’t find lime green or hot pink New Balance 990 sneakers. Instead, this shoe embraces muted and mature tones.
We love the cool and refined look of a grey 990. From a deep charcoal to a breezy cloud grey, these colors are elegant but understated. Or get the always-in-style jet-black designs.
If you need some color in your life, we also carry navy blue and golden yellow colors. They’re still luxe and muted but have a little more boldness.
