Running on Bare Feet

The mission to give runners the feeling of running on their bare feet has always been at the forefront of Nike’s mission. Since the ’90s, Nike has dropped countless silhouettes in their research and development to continue to improve this feeling. The Nike Air Presto, also known as the “t-shirt for your feet” due to its easy and comfortable fit, became a highly exalted sneaker in the running world, worn by many professional runners and still stocking shelves to this day.  The Presto, with its V-notch design and form fitting upper, helped give way to a new generation of running shoes known as the Nike Free.

Find your Free

The Nike Air Presto may have helped get the Nike Free up and running, but true inspiration for the shoe itself started at a college track practice, where Nike designers spotted athletes cooling down in the grass, without shoes. This grabbed their attention, and after some research, they found that runners gained more flexibility in the foot and increased strength. By 2004, the first iteration of the Nike Free was born, with its signature siping patterned outsole to allow the foot to flex effortlessly on the feet of runners across the country, and before long, across the world. Today, the Nike Free family is continuing to expand with various ratings ranging from 3.0 to 7.0 to indicate the level of “free” or movement in the shoe, and with new models and colorways always on the drop, you can find a pair of Nike Frees in men’s, women’s, and kids’ sizing to match your stride.
