At a Stanford University track practice Nike designers watched runners cool off on a grass field, barefoot. After examining the runners’ activity further, Nike learned that runners benefited from more flexibility, balance and strength from their time in the grass without shoes. Nike set out on a mission to create a shoe that mimics this movement, and after significant wear-testing and research, the Nike Free RN made its debut in 2004.
