The word “fleece” can often elicit a mental image of thick, sheep’s wool traditionally used to line a heavy coat. These days, though, the term fleece usually refers to a soft, lightweight manufactured fabric typically made from 100% polyester or cotton/poly blends. Warmer and much lighter than wool, modern fleece fabric’s fiber structure creates a thin layer of air pockets that hold in warmth, making the material ideal for fleece jackets, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and other apparel. Fleece is also highly breathable and offers moisture-wicking action to draw sweat away from the body, making it a favorite of athletes.
