An Explosion of Style
MJ exploded onto the scene on his way to Rookie of the Year in the 1984-85 season. But as good as he was on the court, he proved to be even more explosive off it, when his signature Air Jordan sneaker hit the shelves.
Jordan had just won a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles games, and his fame on the national stage all seemed to come together at the right time. Then his Chicago team got a letter from the league cautioning him against wearing such bold shoes during games. Nike used this opportunity to add a rebellious nature to the shoe's storyline by implying that MJ’s new signature shoe had been “banned” by the league.
The originals were so popular that each subsequent release became an event unto itself. And as Jordan’s shoe line began to take off, Nike began re-releasing popular silhouettes as “Retros” in 1994, then even spun off the Jordan line to a brand of its own in 1997.
Once and Again
Retros are always fresh, and girls’ Jordan selections at Foot Locker are right on point, offering an easy connection to greatness.
The Jordan AJ 1 Mid is a mid-height re-release of the original, with its bold iconic Swoosh on the midfoot and MJ’s original Wings logo on the ankle collar.
Jordan’s Retro 3 recalls the shoe that kept MJ with Nike. At a time when Jordan had been contemplating leaving the company, designer Tinker Hatfield came on the scene and approached the Jordan line differently by getting to know the player, incorporating aspects of MJ’s personality in his shoes. The now-famous elephant print debuted on this shoe.
The Retro 4 was the first to feature a carve-out revealing the Air cushioning under the heel.
Jordan’s Retro 8 was the first to feature a lace shroud, which was designed to help lash down your foot for stability. And it offered an easy place to imprint MJ’s “23.”

And no matter how a girl builds her Jordan look, she can finish it with Nike apparel, whether it’s an oversized T-shirt, a dress, leggings, or even jumpers and jacket/pant sets for the littlest fans.
