At its origins, Timberland was the Abington Shoe Company, a Boston-based business that got its start back in 1952. The company changed its name in 1973 — the same year the iconic, wheat-colored waterproof boot debuted which was no coincidence. The waterproof boot warranted this company name change on its own after it saw huge waves of popularity thanks to its revolutionary, waterproof design and sleek, utilitarian look.
