Nike evolved and developed its foam-cushioned shoes until a breakthrough in 1978 when aerospace engineer Frank Rudy’s encapsulated air debuted in the Air Tailwind as part of its new Nike Air technology.
While Nike branched its Air tech, in 1987, fans of the feel got to see the invisible. That’s when Nike touched off its Air Revolution, led by the Air Max running shoe. Not only did its sleek design exude a sense of speed, but also allowed its wearers to show off the one-of-a-kind carve-outs in the midsole.
Many of those numbered Air Max releases—the Air Max 90, Air Max 95, and more— still remain popular as re-releases or retros. Designed for high performance back in the day, they’re geared toward a more casual lifestyle today.
Nike running shoes can now be seen almost anywhere, whether on the feet of athletes or pop culture icons.
Stepping up Innovation
Nike designers didn’t just sit back comfortably admiring their art. They kept reimagining ways to keep feet cushioned and comfortable.
The VaporMax line debuted in May 2017, going full-length with its Max Air midsole/outsole. Deeply articulated flex grooves let your foot flex naturally while retaining cushioning in every step, so you can strut comfortably and confidently while showing your sneakers off.
Shoes such as the Wildhorse line let you take your Nike Air cushioning off-road, with a more aggressive tread designed to keep you moving forward without slipping up.
One of Nike’s most iconic designs is both a throwback and a new face. The Air Zoom Pegasus series was one of the Swoosh’s OG running styles, adding new touches here and there to keep up with the evolving needs of runners. Forefoot Zoom Air cushioning adds a low-profile version of Air cushioning designed to keep your feet close to the ground and
responsive with every step. And Nike React foam cushioning adds a lightweight feel so you can conquer the day with ease.
The Zoom Gravity also features a Zoom Air forefoot and a foam-cushioned heel so you're comfortable whenever you're on the move. And its mesh upper and midfoot band offer performance elements in a shoe that looks just as good chilling.
And with so many choices available at Foot Locker, including Nike shirts, hoodies, tech fleece, and more, you can rep the iconic brand in style from head to toe.
