For homegrown Beantown fans, it’s about more than simply winning. Long-standing traditions and family fandom cross generational borders. For no team is this truer than for the one and only Beantown icon — the Boston Celtics.
They're Going Green
One of the original eight teams in the NBA, the Celtics were born in 1946 and entered the NBA three years later when the National Basketball League merged with the Basketball Association of America. Just a few years later, the Celts established their Irish pride when Zang Auerbach (brother to the well-known team coach Red) designed a new leprechaun logo.
With a wink and a smile, that green leprechaun — in several different incarnations — has stuck with the team ever since, but not without a few small changes along the way. In 1995, the Celtics found a new home at TD Garden, and shortly thereafter, their leprechaun got a shiny new upgrade: a golden jacket. To this day, Celtics fans continue to rock the gold and green.
